14 years as a CMO taught me this:

The way you lead makes or breaks your business.

And not only the way you lead others… the way you lead yourself, too.

I’ve scaled teams, driven growth, and made plenty of mistakes along the way.

Here are the 5 biggest lessons that changed everything:

1. Clarity is everything.

Early on, I thought leadership meant having all the answers.

It doesn’t. It means setting priorities, removing confusion, and giving your team a clear direction.

When people know exactly what’s expected, execution becomes effortless.

2. You can’t do it all.

I tried to control every decision, every detail, every outcome.

This was a recipe for burnout.

The real job is building a team that can think, execute, and grow without you doing everything.

Trusting people is a skill. Learn it fast.

3. Speed beats perfection.

I used to obsess over getting everything right.

But in business, speed wins.

Done and improving is always better than waiting for perfect.

The faster you move, the faster you learn what actually works.

Execution creates momentum—perfection slows it down.

4. If you don’t develop your team, you’ll always be stuck.

For years, I thought I was too busy to coach my team. I was wrong.

A team that grows is a team that takes pressure off your shoulders.

Invest in their development, and suddenly, you’re not the only one pushing things forward.

5. Your energy sets the tone.

There were times I was frustrated, exhausted, and overwhelmed…

And my team felt it.

Leadership isn’t just what you say, it’s how you show up every day.

If you want a high-energy, problem-solving culture, it starts with you.

14 years in, and I’m still learning.

Leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s about setting a vision, empowering people, and moving fast.

Focus on clarity, trust, and execution.

Get those right, and everything else follows.

3 Tips

Remember and Use People’s Names: One of the best ways to connect with others is to remember and use their names. It makes people feel seen and lets them know that you genuinely care about them.

This isn’t just a one-time thing, either. You should consistently and regularly use the names of people you interact with. This isn’t just good for others, it’s good for you, too. It trains you to pay attention to people as people.

Sincerely Appreciate Others: Similar to using someone’s name, sincerely appreciating the people around you is another great way to connect with people. This means you have to be on the lookout for things to appreciate.

It’s much easier to focus on the negative circumstances or events around us. But making an effort to notice and verbally appreciate the positive things going on around you retrains your perspective to be more positive. It also makes you more enjoyable to be around.

Take Responsibility for Your Mistakes: Another way to connect with the people you work with is to take responsibility. When you admit to your mistakes and fix them, people will begin to respect you as someone they can trust.

It’s the opposite of what we expect, but when people know that you will own up to mistakes and will do everything you can to make it right, they know they can trust you.

1 Book

How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie: This is a classic when it comes to people skills. It’s a must-read for anyone learning to build their network.

Although some have stereotyped this book as a list of ways to manipulate people, Carnegie is very clear throughout the book that, if you follow every step he gives without genuinely caring for people, it won’t work. You have to learn to care about the people around you if you’re going to succeed.
