Defeating Your Competition
Future-Proof Your Business...
Hey! It’s Brian here. Before we dive in, I wanted to announce the launch of my new book, The Lonely CEO on Amazon. You can pick up a copy below:
Have you ever considered the true scope of your competition in business?
And I don’t just mean your direct competition…
Here’s what you should be focusing on.
While it's natural to focus on known rivals, the real challenge lies in anticipating and preparing for future competitors who have yet to emerge.
So are you equipped to confront these unseen adversaries and future-proof your company?
In business, competition is inevitable.
But the most significant threat often comes from unexpected places.
The competitors who have yet to surface.
While it's essential to keep a close eye on existing competitors, focusing solely on known rivals can be shortsighted.
Neglecting to anticipate and prepare for emerging competitors leaves your company vulnerable to disruption and blindsides you to potential threats on the horizon.
Future-proofing your company involves proactive measures to mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities presented by emerging competitors.
This means creating a culture of innovation, adaptability, and strategic foresight within your organization.
Future-proofing requires a keen understanding of emerging trends, technologies, and competitive landscapes.
Investing in market research, trend analysis, and scenario planning enables you to identify potential disruptors and pivot your strategies accordingly.
It may involve strategic partnerships, collaborations, and ecosystem development.
By creating alliances with complementary businesses, leveraging emerging technologies, and nurturing innovation ecosystems, you can fortify your competitive position and enhance your resilience to future threats.
While traditional competitors pose a significant challenge, the true test of resilience lies in preparing for the competitors that have yet to emerge.
Constantly keeping your eye on the horizon is the only way to future-proof your business.
3 Tips
Deadlines: Set project deadlines even if no one else has given them to you.
Decide when it would be best for the project to be completed and stick to it. Be sure to write down the deadline and your reasons for setting it then. When you’re tempted to procrastinate, you’ll be able to remind yourself of all the reasons it will be better if you keep the deadline.
Task List Review: At the end of each day, review your task list.
Mark off your completed tasks and take inventory of the incomplete ones. Consider why they went undone. Did you try to do too much? Or did some unexpected circumstance pop up?
Take your conclusions into account as you write the next day’s task list.
Project Management Software: When working on a project with multiple moving parts, using project management software can help you keep everything organized.
A tool like Notion or Asana allows you to organize all the different aspects of a project, including research, task lists, and documents, while also keeping track of what’s completed, unfinished, or not started yet.
These types of tools are especially helpful when working with others.

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, by Angela Duckworth - This book discusses the difference between someone with phenomenal talent who doesn’t achieve much and someone with mediocre talent who is highly successful.
Dr. Duckworth argues that the difference is what she calls “grit,” which she says is the ability to persevere in the face of hardship. If you need a reminder to keep after it even when it’s hard, this book is it.
