Spring in Michigan can be an absolute A-hole.

65 degrees today.
35 on Monday.
And the forecast says a windchill of -5 overnight one of these days.

You never quite trust it.

But something interesting is happening on the farm anyway.

Our chickens have started laying more eggs.

More eggs every week as the light stretches longer.

And something else changed.

Last Wednesday we got rid of three roosters.

They ran the place like a gang. Loud. Aggressive. Always fighting.

The one rooster left behind was the one they used to pick on.

Now?

He’s the ruler of the hen kingdom.

And he’s doing a great job.

Calm. Steady. No chaos in the coop.

It made me think about something.

Sometimes leadership doesn’t emerge because the wrong voices are too loud.

Bad habits.
Bad thoughts.
Too many opinions.

Clear the noise… and suddenly the right leader appears.

Sometimes that leader was there all along.

Or get rid of a few annoying roosters…not the same way I did though.

Then something else happened this week.

My daughter Kora — who is already a wizard with video and photography — decided she might try drawing.

Pencil portraits of her favorite musicians.

Man… they were good.

Really good.

I scanned a few, cleaned them up a bit, printed them, and put them in frames to surprise her.

She loved it.

And it reminded me of something else.

You never really know what you’re capable of until you try. And Kora is a pretty cool young woman.

You might discover something.

Or you might just enjoy the act of making something.

And that’s enough.

I can’t draw at all.

Not even close.

But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try.

Art isn’t reserved for artists.

Art is the act of making.

The act of noticing.

The act of putting something into the world that wasn’t there before.

Spring in Michigan might be unpredictable.

But creation never really stops.

It just waits for someone to start.

3 Things Worth Paying Attention To

1. Noise can hide leadership
Sometimes the best leader isn’t missing — they’re just buried under louder voices.

2. Light changes everything
More daylight changes chickens, gardens, and people. Pay attention to your own energy as the season shifts.

3. Creativity starts with curiosity
You don’t need permission to try something new.

One Simple Reset (This Week)

Create something small:

  • sketch something badly

  • take a photo you normally wouldn’t

  • write a paragraph instead of scrolling

  • build or fix something with your hands

Don’t judge it.

Just make something.
